Job description

Martin Marietta is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for our Durham mine. This role predominantly involves maintenance (about 80%) and operating mobile heavy equipment (about 20%). Under the supervision of the supervisor, the Equipment Operator will operate plant mobile heavy equipment such as haul trucks, motor graders, water trucks, etc., to transport raw materials from the pit to the plant efficiently and safely, maximizing loading capacity. The position is on the night shift, with operating hours from 8 PM to 6 AM.

Essential Functions

1. Operate various mobile equipment, including haul trucks, motor graders, water trucks, loaders, and cranes, with training if necessary.
2. Assist in plant repairs and maintenance cleanup.
3. Perform pre-shift safety inspections on equipment.
4. Conduct preventative maintenance and report repairs to shop personnel.
5. Maintain good housekeeping of equipment.
6. Follow MSHA and plant safety regulations.
7. Perform duties with minimal supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.

Preferred Education and Experience

• At least 1 year of experience operating heavy mobile equipment.
• Experience in maintenance, welding, military, or material handling is a plus.
• Bilingual skills are advantageous.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read and understand equipment manuals.
• Complete pre-shift inspection reports.
• Communicate effectively in English via radio or CB.
• Basic mathematical skills for daily reports.
• Wear all required safety equipment.
• Perform duties safely and responsibly.
• Read and interpret gauges accurately.
• Work effectively in a team environment.

Working Conditions

The role involves operating large, typically air-conditioned equipment. Occasionally, outside work in various weather conditions—heat, cold, wet, or dry—is required. Exposure to dust, sand, gravel, diesel exhaust, and other elements may occur.
