Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Operator will operate various types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders, to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May also repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.

A Day in the Life

• Operate heavy equipment of various sizes and weights used in site or highway construction.
• Follow company and OSHA safety procedures. Report issues to the project Foreman, Superintendent, or Safety Director.
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; report defects or repairs needed.
• Assist in training entry-level employees in maintenance and repair duties.
• Identify underground and overhead utilities before excavating.
• Review trenching requirements and ensure safety protections are in place.
• Communicate known issues to project management that may affect operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

What You’ll Need

• High school diploma or equivalent, with 6-12 months of construction equipment operating experience, or equivalent education and experience.
• Knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles and ability to operate equipment under various conditions.
• Understanding of hazards and safety precautions related to heavy equipment.
• OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR certification, and ability to follow safety training protocols.
• Ability to read and interpret grade stakes and site plans.
• Good communication skills, both oral and written.
• Mathematical skills for practical application.
• Dependability in attendance and schedule adherence.

Other Requirements

• Pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Willingness to travel as needed.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
• Ability to work 8-12 hour days, Monday through Friday, with possible weekends and flexible hours.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Must perform manual labor involving physical exertion, lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to weather and variable terrain.

Work near machinery and loud noises, with exposure to environmental conditions including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.
