Job description

Summary:

Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment and specialized machinery utilized in maintenance and repair.

Supervision Received:

Director of Public Works, Operations Manager, Streets Superintendent, Streets Foreman

Supervision Exercised:

None

FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Operates equipment such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, motor graders, sand spreaders, street sweepers, mowers, concrete saws, bucket truck with hydraulics, chain saw, tree chipper, tree stumper, air compressor, jackhammer, and air-driven compaction tools.
  2. Operates other special and standard equipment as assigned.
  3. Assists with sanding and snow removal.
  4. Levels and finishes asphalt and concrete.
  5. Performs manual labor related to assigned operations and occasionally supervises other operators and laborers.
  6. Must be available on call occasionally during weekends or after hours.
  7. Adheres to City policies and procedures while performing all duties.
  8. Performs related work as required.
  9. Responds promptly to emergencies as part of job responsibilities.
Peripheral Job Duties:
  1. Opens and closes graves at cemetery.
  2. Operates forklift and skid steer loaders.
  3. Provides assistance and substitutes for all Public Works departments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of heavy motor equipment operation, maintenance, traffic laws, safety precautions, and ability to follow instructions and perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

At least two years of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment Used:

Includes dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, sewer jetters, sand spreaders, motor patrols, street sweepers, concrete saws, bucket truck with hydraulics, chain saw, tree chipper, tree stumper, air compressor, jackhammer, air-driven compaction tools.

Physical Demands:

Frequent standing, walking, talking, hearing; manual dexterity; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds; visual acuity.

Work Environment:

Primarily outdoor work in various weather conditions, with exposure to noise, vibration, and mechanical hazards. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.

Necessary Special Requirement:

Valid North Dakota commercial driver license within three months of hire; insurable under City’s insurance. Safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment drug testing and ongoing substance testing.
