Job summary

The Town of Ocean City, MD is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to manage and operate a variety of heavy and complex equipment. Duties include road maintenance, paving, and installation of underground utilities, with opportunities to perform manual tasks and basic supervision as needed.

Candidates must have a CDL Class B with Air Brakes, a current DOT physical card, and at least one year of related experience. Preference given to those with a GED or high school diploma and hazmat endorsements.

Qualifications

• Requires CDL Class B with Air Brakes; DOT physical and drug/alcohol compliance.
• At least 1 year of paid experience operating automotive equipment or heavy machinery.
• Preferred: High school diploma or GED; Hazard Material and Tankers endorsements.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy and complex equipment; including listed heavy and light units.
• Perform road maintenance, paving, and underground utility installs.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment and basic repairs.
• Possibly supervise a small crew and perform manual tasks as needed.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

SUMMARY

Operates one (1) or more types of heavy and complex motor and hand equipment.

PAY SCALE

HEO I - $45,781 - $58,365

HEO II - $48,069 - $61,287

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The employee:

• Performs maintenance worker duties when not acting as a heavy equipment operator.
• Operates at least five (5) of the following: wheeled and tracked vehicles over ten tons, loader over five (5) tons, excavators, vacuum truck, snowplow, road grader, backhoe, street broom, stationary grapple crane, road mixer, beach tractors, vibratory roller, sanitizer, paver, sludge spreading equipment, tractor and tanker and other similar types of equipment. Also, operates small equipment such as pumps, saws and lasers.
• Performs road maintenance, grading and paving, installs underground utility systems such as water mains and services, storm drains, sewer mains and does repairs on same.
• Performs snow removal, demolition projects, etc.
• Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment used.
• May be required to perform manual work such as, but not limited to, digging ditches, operating equipment of less weight, to perform lower-level job progression, and to periodically supervise a small crew.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
