Job summary

New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator (SG-24) to work under general supervision of a Civil Engineer. The role involves operating a wide range of construction equipment, performing maintenance, and supporting project planning and safety compliance across NY parks.

Candidate must have four years of full-time heavy equipment experience (or equivalent training) and a valid NY driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Four years of full-time experience in heavy equipment operation or equivalent training.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle operated.
• Part-time and volunteer experience may be prorated if verifiable.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain construction equipment including tractors with lowboy trailers, heavy dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, rollers, excavators, and bulldozers.
• Change oil, check fluid levels, and inspect safety devices and controls before operation.
• Perform maintenance and repair of park infrastructure such as water/wastewater, drainage, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Plan projects, read blueprints, and assist with purchasing and coordination.
• Conduct inspections to diagnose issues and determine corrective actions for equipment and tasks.
• Use hand tools and vehicles to complete assigned tasks and document progress.
