Job summary

Personnel Board of Jefferson County is seeking Construction Equipment Operators to support multiple Merit System agencies around the Birmingham area. Operators will run heavy gasoline- and diesel-powered machines and must maintain safety and efficiency in outdoor work environments.

Required qualifications include a Class B CDL with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL and/or a HAZMAT endorsement within 90 days, plus demonstrated experience around heavy equipment and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

• Hold a valid Class B CDL and be able to obtain Class A CDL and/or HAZMAT within 90 days.
• Experience working around construction equipment (e.g., backhoe, grader, track dozer, track loader).
• Experience following safety standards for heavy/construction equipment operation.

Responsibilities

• Backfills, excavates, spreads, and scrapes specified parts of construction or maintenance projects using heavy equipment to meet project specifications.
• Cleans, clears, and prepares roads, ditches, sewer lines and land using heavy equipment for construction or property maintenance purposes.
• Communicates with supervisors, coworkers, and the public regarding job duties and equipment operations.
• Loads, unloads, lifts, and places materials using heavy equipment to complete projects.
• Performs preventative maintenance and basic repairs on heavy equipment to maintain operations.
• Promotes safe work practices and sets up traffic work zones; supervises staff as needed.
