Qualifications

If this sounds like you, Montgomery Parks Facilities Management Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland is the place you want to be! The Heavy Equipment Operatoris part of the Facilities Management Division. This Division of 118 staff provides for the care and maintenance of the Department’s physical assets including facilities, pavement, fleet, and major building systems. With a budget over $13 million dollars, the division is responsible for facility condition assessments, major and minor maintenance programs, and serves as the primary support to the Department’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). The division strives to achieve a balance between the upkeep of aging facilities and new construction by integrating a number of CIP and major maintenance projects into the daily work program each year.

Safety

  • Utilizes specific personal protection equipment; ensures safeguards are in place.
  • Ensures safety of work area and sites.
  • Performs critical Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) work to remove barriers and maintain compliance.

Operation/Maintenance of Tools and Heavy Equipment

  • Operates heavy and light equipment to perform routine construction and maintenance work (dozers, wheel loaders, excavators, etc.)
  • Inspects and reports on equipment and vehicle needs daily.
  • Provides periodic maintenance of small equipment and tools.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools, and vehicles for crew.

General Labor and Administrative Tasks

  • Directs work of equipment operators; monitors progress.
  • Meets with vendors to plan work and obtain quotes; monitors work.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, grade elevations and construction documents.
  • Estimates materials, tools, and equipment needed for daily assignments.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

  • Skilled in problem solving, interpreting blueprints, drawing and other specifications.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships.
  • Skilled in the operation of mini-hoe, skid loader, dozer, wheel loader, dump truck, road grader, front-end loader, roller, tractor, tractor-trailer truck, and other heavy equipment machinery.
  • Ability to read and understand siteplans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Possess a valid Class Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  2. Knowledge of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Department of Motor Vehicles standards of specialized equipment used in operation and safety.
  3. Construction and excavating experience.
  4. Knowledge of heavy equipment operation procedures and characteristics.
  5. Experience in directing work of others.
  1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

  2. Three years of equipment operation, including a minimum of one year of experience using heavy equipment.

  3. Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at time of employment. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.

  4. Successfully pass Commission medical examination.

Class/Specification: Equipment Operator II

Working Conditions:

Incumbents in this class must frequently: remain in a stationary position, move about inside the office and outside, operate vehicles, tools, and equipment, ascend, and descend ladders, position self to complete manual work, move equipment, tools and supplies weighing up to 49 pounds and work in outdoor weather conditions. Overtime and emergency on-call time may be required.
