Job summary

City of San Juan, Texas is seeking a dependable refuse collection driver to operate front end loader, side loader, or rear loader trucks on designated routes. You will haul to the landfill, dump, and return to routes, while using hydraulic arms to load and compact refuse.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid Texas Class B CDL with a clean driving record. Some experience is preferred; training is provided. The position involves variable hours and routine vehicle maintenance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required or obtainable within 9 months.
• Must possess a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
• Some experience in refuse collection or similar ops is preferred, with on-the-job training provided.

Responsibilities

• Operate side loader, packer, or other refuse collection trucks on designated routes.
• Transport loads to landfill, unload, and return to routes.
• Operate hydraulically operated arms and ramps to load and compact refuse.
• Perform daily street sweeping and routine vehicle inspections.
• Identify equipment issues and report them for timely maintenance.
• Maintain safe operation and cooperatively serve customers on the route.

Job description

HOURLY: $17.20

JOB OBJECTIVES:

Under general supervision. Operates various refuse vehicles including front end loader, side loader, rear loader, or any mechanized loader in the collection of commercial or residential solid waste and recyclable materials. The position occasionally prepares simple reports and/or records. Several decisions made weekly requiring some interpretations and judgments. Position haslittle or no contact with the public; has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Operates a mechanical side loader, packer truck collecting solid waste on a designated route, including streets.
2. Drives the loaded truck to the landfill and dumps the load, returning to the designated route.
3. Operates hydraulically operated arms tolift mechanized containers which are emptied into the truck and hydraulic ramps to compact the refuse.
4. Operates rear loader packer truck collecting uncontained refuse in a designated area.
5. Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments.
6. Daily sweeping of streets in designated areas, weather permitting.
7. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS:

City vehicle, two-way radio, backhoe, front end loader, side loader, rear loader, sanitation/roll-off truck, backhoe, grapple truck, brush unit and pressure washer.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position requires some unusual working hours, irregular hours or skills, may involve occasional travel; hazards exist which may result in lost time, accident, exposure to soiling of clothing and skin surface; work involves normal weather changes. Physical effort requires cleaning the vacuum of the sweeper by climbing and the cleaning of any vehicle that is used. Must be able to lift greater than 15 lbs.

EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED:

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; however, will be afforded an opportunity to acquire within nine (9) months if the applicant does not possess one at the time of employment. Sufficient knowledge of the subject to perform work in a limited range of work situations with intermittent supervision. Some experience is preferred; however, it can be accumulated during 2 to 6 months employment in the position. Must also possess a valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
