Job description

Job Title: HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

PAY GRADE: 112 - $35,884.00 minimum salary

Purpose of Classification

Performs technical work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of road and drainage infrastructure. Responsibilities include maintaining existing roadways, drainage structures, and grounds, performing routine maintenance, identifying corrective actions, answering maintenance questions, and maintaining repair records.

Essential Functions
  1. Operates and maintains light to heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, pavers, rollers, chip spreaders, loaders, backhoes, and tractors for street and drainage work.
  2. Checks damaged equipment daily, assesses work areas for safety risks, and performs minor maintenance and repairs on construction equipment.
  3. Estimates materials needed for road and culvert construction or repairs.
  4. Uses survey equipment to set and verify ground elevations for road improvements.
  5. Installs culverts, performs ditch work, operates backhoe and excavator for shoulder widening and drainage cleaning.
  6. Acts as a flagger during road projects and safely operates power tools.
  7. Assists with trash, debris, and tire cleanup.
  8. Transports materials and heavy equipment, including semi-trailers, and maintains tools and machinery.
  9. Must be on call to assist with severe weather events.
Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED plus four (4) years of experience in technical or repair work with road construction equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank and air brakes endorsements. Hazardous Material Endorsements are preferred.

Physical Ability: Ability to exert medium physical effort, including lifting (up to 100 pounds), carrying, pushing, and pulling objects. Tasks may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motions.

Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive sounds and visual cues; communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Exposure to adverse conditions such as damp surfaces, fumes, odors, flammable liquids, and high noise levels.

This position is subject to a six-month probationary period and must pass a drug and alcohol evaluation.
