SubTerra Utilities is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate excavators, skid steers, loaders, backhoes, and trenchers on underground utility projects in Texas. You will work with the crew, follow project plans, and maintain equipment while prioritizing safety and quality.

The role requires 3+ years of equipment operation experience, underground utility exposure, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience operating heavy construction equipment preferred.
  • Underground utility or civil construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience operating excavators, skid steers, loaders, backhoes, or trenchers.
  • Ability to follow plans, directions, and instructions from the Foreman.
  • Basic understanding of grades, depths, measurements, and excavation practices.
  • Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel throughout Texas as project requirements dictate.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Excavate trenches to required depths, widths, and grades.
  • Maintain proper production while avoiding damage to equipment, utilities, structures, and surrounding property.
  • Follow Foreman directions and work according to project plans and specifications.
  • Assist with hand work and other labor activities when equipment operation is not required.
  • Work closely with laborers, pipe crews, and Foremen to safely and efficiently complete daily tasks.

Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment used in underground utility installation and related construction activities. This position works as part of an underground utility crew and is responsible for operating equipment productively while maintaining safety, quality, and proper care of company equipment. The ideal candidate is an experienced, dependable operator who understands that equipment operation is about more than simply running a machine. A successful operator works closely with the Foreman and crew, understands the work being performed, takes pride in their production, and helps ensure the job is completed safely and correctly.

Reporting Structure

Reports To: Dand Woods, Superintendent

Core Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
  • Safely and efficiently operate heavy construction equipment, including:
    • Excavators
    • Mini excavators
    • Skid steers
    • Loaders
    • Backhoes
    • Trenchers
    • Compaction equipment
    • Other equipment as assigned
  • Operate equipment for excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, material handling, and underground utility installation.
  • Maintain proper production while avoiding unnecessary damage to equipment, utilities, structures, and surrounding property.
  • Follow direction from the Foreman and perform work according to project plans and specifications.
  • Assist with hand work and other labor activities when equipment operation is not required.
  • Work closely with laborers, pipe crews, and Foremen to safely and efficiently complete daily tasks.
Underground Utility Work
  • Assist with underground utility installation and construction activities.
  • Excavate trenches to required depths, widths, and grades.
  • Maintain proper trench dimensions and safe working conditions.
  • Assist with bedding, pipe installation, backfill, compaction, and restoration activities.
  • Maintain awareness of existing utilities and underground infrastructure.
  • Follow utility markings and excavation requirements.
  • Communicate potential conflicts, unsafe conditions, or unexpected site conditions to the Foreman immediately.
Safety
  • Follow all company safety policies and jobsite safety requirements.
  • Perform equipment inspections before operating machinery.
  • Properly use required PPE at all times.
  • Maintain awareness of employees working around equipment.
  • Follow proper excavation, trenching, and equipment safety procedures.
  • Maintain safe distances from underground and overhead utilities.
  • Immediately report accidents, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions.
  • Never operate equipment in a manner that puts people, property, or utilities at unnecessary risk.
Equipment Care & Maintenance
  • Perform daily inspections of assigned equipment.
  • Check fluid levels, tracks/tires, attachments, hydraulics, and other components as required.
  • Keep equipment clean and properly maintained.
  • Report mechanical issues, damage, or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Operate equipment in a manner that minimizes unnecessary wear and damage.
  • Properly secure equipment at the end of each workday or when not in use.
  • Maintain and care for company tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials.
Jobsite Responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Assist the crew with loading, unloading, material handling, and general labor when needed.
  • Follow project schedules and daily production goals.
  • Work efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively with the Foreman and other crew members.
  • Represent SubTerra Utilities professionally when working around customers, inspectors, general contractors, and other subcontractors.
