Job summary

The Town of Longmeadow, MA DPW is seeking a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate trucks and equipment for street maintenance, water and sewer work, and related public works projects.

The successful candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, 1–3 years of related experience, a Class B CDL with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements (Class A preferred), OSHA 10 and asbestos safety training.

Job description

The Town of Longmeadow, MA DPW is seeking a qualified applicant for FT position of Heavy Equipment Operator. Position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and equipment for street maintenance, water and sewer system maintenance, and related public works projects; and provides skilled labor function for the Public Works Department.

Successful candidate must have:

• Knowledge of relevant Massachusetts General Laws related to essential functions. Knowledge of materials, machines, methods, and current practices essential to the maintenance of town streets, roadways, water, and sewer systems. Knowledge of occupational safety precautions.
• Ability to multi-task. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain good public relations and to maintain effective collaborative working relationships with Town departments, department heads, fellow employees, officials and the general public and to respond in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to work independently and perform duties as assigned. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, in all weather conditions.
• Strong communication skills, problem solving skills and customer service skills. Mechanical skills needed for preventive maintenance of equipment. Safe and effective equipment and vehicle operating techniques

High school diploma or equivalent and 1 to 3 years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience. Current valid motor vehicle license; Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements required, with Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements preferred. OSHA 10 and Asbestos pipe safety training.

• Required to be on call as needed to respond to emergencies
