Salary Range: $38.00 To $56.00 Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates a crawler or rubber-tired machine mounted with an excavator bucket. Used for excavating ditches,

structures, and mass excavations, laying pipe and precast concrete structures, loading trucks and placing rock

riprap. May also be equipped with various hydraulic attachments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
  • Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and weights used in road, site or highway construction and paving
  • Operates heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury,property damage or loss of life
  • Performs daily safety and maintenance checks
  • Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required
  • Maintains the equipment and advise supervisor of any requirement for maintenance or repairs
  • Maneuver heavy equipment into loading or unloading position, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that the vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
  • Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance
  • Uses equipment as appropriate to level roads and/or working area, ensure proper drainage, and develop proper grade
  • Ensures a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
  • Properly follows all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment
  • Reports any problems to your immediate supervisor
  • Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and materials with shovel
  • Follows direction of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite
  • May be called upon to run small power tools such as jack hammer
  • Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials
  • Lifts, carries and holds material, tools and supplies
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required
  • Must keep abreast of all applicable laws and regulations at all times
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment operations and construction and maintenance procedures
  • Must possess a working knowledge of grades and blueprints
  • Skill in operation of assigned equipment
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and general public

  • Complies with company policies and procedures.
  • Performs job safely with respect to others, property and individual safety
Experience:
  • 3+ years operating excavators in underground utility or pipeline construction.
  • Ability to read grades, blueprints, and excavate to specification.
  • Strong understanding of excavation safety, trenching, and working around existing underground utilities.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Requirements:

This position involves medium to heavy physical work typical of construction field environments. Employees are regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl on uneven or rough terrain for extended periods. Manual handling of tools, materials, and equipment is a routine part of the job.

Employees must frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds safely, and may occasionally lift or move materials up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another employee or through mechanical means such as hoists, forklifts, or other lifting equipment. Proper lifting techniques, team lifting, and mechanical aids should be used whenever possible to prevent strain or injury.

Employees must also use their hands and arms to handle, reach, and operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment safely and efficiently.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily outdoors in active construction settings, including field operations and job sites. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, wind, and dust. The noise level is frequently loud due to heavy equipment operation, machinery, and construction activity. Employees may also be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, airborne particles, and other site-related hazards.

All work must be performed in compliance with Cal/OSHA safety standards, and employees are required to consistently wear and properly use all designated personal protective equipment (PPE). Employees are expected to follow company safety policies, participate in required safety training, and promptly report any unsafe conditions to their supervisor.
