We are seeking a dependable Heavy Equipment Operator / Backup Scale House Operator to support daily operations while maintaining high standards of safety, environmental compliance, equipment care, and customer service.

Position Summary

This position is primarily responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of landfill operations, including waste placement and compaction, grading, cover application, road maintenance, and general site work. The employee will also provide backup scale house coverage during breaks, absences, and other periods as assigned.

This is primarily an outdoor equipment operating position. Candidates must be willing and able to perform equipment operation, general labor, and backup scale house duties as needed.

• Safely and efficiently operate equipment such as landfill compactors, bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, haul trucks, water trucks, motor graders, skid steers, forklifts, grapple cranes, and other material-handling equipment, as trained and authorized.
• Place, spread, and compact waste in accordance with established operating procedures, maintaining proper lift thickness and compaction to support efficient use of landfill airspace.
• Assist with maintaining a controlled, properly sized working face and safe traffic flow around operating areas.
• Grade and maintain haul roads, working areas, slopes, stockpiles, drainage areas, and access roads.
• Support stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and other environmental compliance activities as directed.
• Perform litter control, housekeeping, general labor, and site cleanup when equipment operation is not required.

Equipment Inspection and Care

• Complete pre-operation and post-operation equipment inspections and accurately document findings.
• Monitor equipment condition and immediately report mechanical problems, damage, leaks, or maintenance needs.
• Perform routine cleaning and basic operator maintenance, including cleaning tracks or wheels as needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe equipment operating area.

Backup Scale House Operations

• Operate truck scales and computer systems to accurately record incoming and outgoing weights, material types, customer information, and transactions.
• Identify and classify incoming materials to ensure accurate billing and compliance with facility waste acceptance procedures.
• Accept or reject loads within assigned authority and training; refer questionable or prohibited materials to management.
• Notify operations personnel of special loads or materials requiring additional review, documentation, or handling.
• Direct customers and drivers to the appropriate unloading or loading areas.
• Collect payments, issue receipts, balance cash and daily transactions, and secure funds in the designated depository according to company procedures.
• Maintain accurate scale tickets, transaction records, and supporting paperwork.
• Organize and prepare scale house tickets and related records for submission to the corporate office according to company procedures.
• Follow the facility’s Permit to Operate, Operations Plan, environmental permits, standard operating procedures, and company policies applicable to assigned duties.
• Follow all PPE requirements, traffic-control procedures, and safe operating practices.
• Immediately report safety hazards, suspected prohibited materials, environmental concerns, spills, incidents, and unusual site conditions to the Operations Manager or Supervisor.
• Participate in daily crew meetings, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required training.
• Communicate effectively with coworkers, customers, drivers, and management.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of heavy equipment operating experience required; three or more years in landfill operations, heavy construction, mining, quarry operations, waste management, or a similar environment preferred.
• Experience operating dozers, excavators, wheel loaders, landfill compactors, or similar equipment.
• Ability to safely operate multiple types of equipment within the limits of training and authorization.
• Landfill experience involving waste placement, compaction, grading, cover application, and working-face operations preferred.
• Basic computer skills required, including the ability to learn scale software and use Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, manage competing tasks, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Dependable attendance, strong follow-through, and a commitment to safety, teamwork, equipment care, and quality work.
• Valid driver’s license required.
