Job summary

Brown County Construction is seeking a Construction Equipment Operator to join our outdoor crews. You will operate excavators, dozers and backhoes on road, highway, and infrastructure projects, following supervisor direction and job specs.

Daily duties include safe operation, performing manual labor when needed, routine maintenance, and coordinating with foremen and crew. Candidates should be comfortable working in varying weather and terrain and able to lift heavy materials as required.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in heavy highway, site development, or asphalt construction preferred.
  • Must be safety conscious and able to work in outdoor environments in varying weather.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, dozers, backhoes) per supervisor direction and project specs.
  • Support daily operations by ensuring equipment is run safely and efficiently.
  • Perform manual labor tasks (shoveling, grading, site prep) as needed to assist the crew.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and minor servicing of equipment for performance and safety.

We offer hands-on work, steady hours, and career development in a team-oriented environment.Heavy Equipment Operator Responsibilties:Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, dozers, backhoes) on construction projects per supervisor direction and job specifications.Support daily operations by ensuring equipment is run safely, efficiently, and within designated tolerances.Perform manual labor duties as needed to assist the crew with tasks such as grading, loading, or laying asphalt.Conduct routine maintenance and minor servicing of equipment to maintain performance and safety.Follow all safety procedures, company policies, and quality standards at all times.Communicate clearly with the foreman and crew to coordinate equipment use and workflow.Work in varying weather conditions and terrain while maintaining focus and productivity.Other Responsibilities:Operating heavy equipment as assigned while maintaining a \"crew-first\" mindset; this includes performing essential manual labor and ground-support tasks as dictated by project needs.Duties include, but are not limited to, shoveling asphalt, concrete, pipe installation, hand-digging, grade checking, traffic control, and general site restoration.Field Support Duties:Hand-shoveling and raking of paving materials (asphalt, concrete, stone, or dirt).Manual grease and maintenance of equipment components using power and hand tools.Setting up and moving traffic control devices and safety signage.Perform all other ancillary duties and manual tasks customary to a heavy construction or civil engineering site to ensure project continuity and crew safety.Physical & Mental Demands:Local travel traditionallyRequired overtimeSeasonal layoffsExtensive physical activityAbility to stand, walk, climb and kneel on uneven terrain for extended periods of time in all weather conditions (heat, rain, cold).Must work outdoors and in all weather conditions/terrainAbility to safely mount and dismount heavy equipment multiple times per shift.Could be asked to work evenings, weekends, and holidaysAbility to lift 50 lbs.Desired Qualifications:Prior experience in heavy highway, site development, or asphalt construction preferred.Familiarity with operating excavators, backhoes, dozers, or similar equipmentAbility to work effectively as part of a team or independently on a job site.Formal training or equipment certifications are a plus.Valid driver’s license required.Must be safety conscious, reliable, and able to work in physically demanding outdoor environments.Physical & Mental Demands:Local travel traditionallyRequired overtimeSeasonal layoffsExtensive physical activityAbility to navigate tight areasRapid emergency egressClimb laddersSit for extended periods of timeEOE/M/F/Disabled/Veteran/DFSP
