Job summary

The City of Dallas is looking for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform repairs and maintenance on diesel- and gasoline-powered heavy equipment, ensuring reliable operation for city services.

This journeyman-level role requires three years of experience, a Texas driver’s license, and relevant certifications. The position involves varying shifts, strong safety focus, and opportunities to work with a diverse fleet across city facilities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
• Three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment involving diesel engines and/or hydraulic systems.
• Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
• Texas Vehicle Inspection License.
• EPA 609 refrigerant recovery lic. or eligibility.
• ASE T-4 or equivalent coursework for Air Brakes/vehicle safety eligibility.
• ASE T-5 or equivalent coursework for Truck Steering and Suspension eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and diagnose heavy equipment, restoring operational readiness.
• Use welding equipment to repair or fabricate items; operate heavy equipment to field repair equipment.
• Disassemble, rebuild, and install transmissions, engines, hydraulics, pumps, seals, and brakes on heavy equipment.
• Tune and adjust parts; troubleshoot electrical systems using schematics.
• Transport equipment to job sites and ensure safety standards are followed.
• Document daily labor and track parts inventory; manage work orders.
• Lead and train entry-level mechanics to comply with safety and quality guidelines.
• Conduct state inspections to ensure compliance.
