The incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment under the supervision of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker. Responsibilities include constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department's fleet. The role involves completing records and reports, using computer equipment, and may include instructing or guiding helpers, apprentices, or other employees. A valid class C driver license is required, and the incumbent must ensure safety and proper handling of materials, tools, and equipment, using PPE at all times. Work may require outdoor activity and travel to field locations or maintenance stations, often in inclement weather. The position may involve shop operation duties, and shifts, work hours, and days may vary.
