Job summary

County of DuPage seeks a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to diagnose, repair and overhaul a range of diesel and heavy equipment within the Division of Transportation. The role includes road tests, emergency repairs, and meticulous record-keeping.

Training toward CDL and air brakes endorsement is provided during employment. The ideal candidate has a HS diploma or GED and at least two years of related experience, plus a valid IL driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of experience repairing trucks and heavy equipment or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain Class A or B CDL with air brakes endorsement within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, and overhaul diesel, automotive, and heavy equipment.
  • Repair and maintain light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks, snow and ice removal equipment, tractors, street sweepers, trailers, and other heavy construction equipment.
  • Diagnose, repair and overhaul diesel and gasoline engines, air-brake systems, hydraulic systems, steering and suspension, electrical, and HVAC systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical defects through road tests and review of repair work before returning equipment to service.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment to detect electrical system problems and defects.
  • Respond to emergency repair calls for county vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare service records of preventive maintenance and other activities as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workshop.

Job description

We are pleased to offer the opportunity to work as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic within the DuPage County Division of Transportation. DuPage County is an authorized training provider for Entry-Level CDL Drivers and are willing to train Heavy Equipment Mechanic employees to help obtain a CDL to meet the after-hire requirement of the position.

This position is included in the Bargaining Unit of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150.

Responsibilities include:
  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, and overhaul a wide variety of Diesel, Automotive, and Heavy equipment
  • Repair and maintain light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks, snow and ice removal equipment, tractors, street sweepers, trailers, and other heavy construction equipment
  • Diagnose, repair and overhaul diesel and gasoline engines, Air-brake systems, hydraulic systems, steering and suspension, electrical, and HVAC systems
  • Diagnoses mechanical defects through performance of road tests on vehicles to locate operational problems and review of repair and maintenance work before returning equipment to service
  • Operates diagnostic equipment for the detection of electrical system problems and defects
  • Responds to emergency calls for repair of county vehicles and equipment
  • Prepares service records of preventive maintenance, repair, and other activities as required
  • Maintains current knowledge relative to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair
  • Performs welding and fabrication tasks
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks
  • Maintains a clean and safe workshop
Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Completion of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in repairing trucks and heavy equipment or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Must possess and maintain in good standing, a valid Illinois Driver’s License
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL with an air brakes endorsement within six (6) months of employment
