Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic – Diesel & Gas

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair diesel- and gasoline-powered heavy equipment at an outdoor facility in Jacksonville, FL. This is a hands-on, outdoor position. Work is performed primarily in an open-air environment rather than inside a climate-controlled maintenance shop. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical troubleshooting skills and experience working on diesel engines, gas engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy industrial equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair diesel- and gasoline-powered heavy equipment.
• Troubleshoot engine, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, cooling, steering, brake, and drivetrain problems.
• Perform preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, and scheduled equipment inspections.
• Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines.
• Repair and replace starters, alternators, batteries, belts, hoses, pumps, bearings, and other mechanical components.
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic pumps, cylinders, hoses, fittings, valves, and related hydraulic components.
• Perform basic electrical diagnostics using meters and other testing equipment.
• Inspect equipment for leaks, excessive wear, damaged components, and other safety or mechanical concerns.
• Repair or replace worn and damaged equipment components as necessary.
• Perform brake, steering, suspension, and drivetrain repairs as applicable to the equipment.
• Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, jacks, and other maintenance equipment.
• Perform basic welding, cutting, grinding, and fabrication when required and qualified.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform repairs in the field or equipment operating area.
• Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and document repairs performed.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
• Follow Lockout/Tagout and other required equipment safety procedures.
• Follow OSHA requirements and all company safety policies.
• Perform additional mechanical and equipment maintenance duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier components with appropriate assistance or lifting equipment.

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Ability to bend, kneel, squat, crouch, crawl, reach, and climb as required to access equipment.

Ability to work underneath, around, and on heavy equipment.

Ability to safely climb onto and off equipment.

Ability to use hand and power tools for extended periods.

Ability to work around moving equipment, engines, hydraulic systems, fuels, oils, and lubricants.

Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Outdoor / Open-Air Work Environment

This position is performed primarily outdoors in an open-air equipment yard or operating facility and is not performed inside a climate-controlled building. The employee should be prepared to work in typical Jacksonville, Florida outdoor conditions, which may include: Heat and humidity Direct sunlight Cold or cooler weather Wind Dust and dirt Rain or wet conditions when work can be performed safely Uneven outdoor surfaces Noise from engines and heavy equipment Exposure to diesel exhaust, gasoline, oils, grease, hydraulic fluids, and other materials commonly associated with heavy equipment maintenance
