Job Title: HEAVY DUTY DIESEL MECHANIC
Under general supervision, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic assigned to the Fleet Operations Division of the General Services Department will perform duties related to the preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the City of Detroit's medium/heavy duty trucks and on/off road equipment, including emergency vehicles, park maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (stationary and mobile).
Examples of Duties
- Follow all safety procedures within local, state, and federal guidelines.
- Ensure a clean and safe work environment.
- Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment such as computerized diagnostic devices and engine analyzers.
- Stay up to date with continual education and new technology through training sessions, workshops, & courses.
- Recommend preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance and reduce downtime, including checking and changing oil and filters, lubricating, greasing, inspecting, and adjusting brakes and steering.
- Inspect parts for wear and damage, and repair or replace faulty parts including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, wheel bearings, and electrical components.
- Repair or replace components on winches, such as cables, ropes, and gears.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related component parts, including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative fuel engines, carburetors, fuel injection systems, transmissions, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Maintain and repair hydraulic pumps, pneumatics, reservoirs, actuators, hoses, pumps, valves, and controls.
- Repair and maintain motors, including hoses, cylinders, power sources, accumulators, and relief valves.
- Maintain and repair after-treatment components such as diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), diesel particulate filters (DPF), diesel exhaust fluid injection (DEF), and selective catalyst reduction (SCR).
- Repair braking systems, including compressors, brake chambers, drums, slack adjusters, dryers, air tanks, valves, lines, safety valves, master cylinders, wheel cylinders, rotors, brakes boosters, calipers, and sensors.
- Diagnose mechanical and emissions failures using visual inspection and electronic testing instruments.
- Rebuild engines, replacing head gaskets, water pumps, and vacuum pumps.
- Repair differentials and drive systems, including axles, tandem axles, jake brakes, seals, and bearings.
- Service fuel injection systems, including injectors, filters, tanks, lines, sensors, engine valves, pumps, and other major components.
Requirements
- Ability to perform tasks on computerized systems, diagnose, and locate mechanical and safety problems, and determine corrective actions.
- Competence to repair, replace, and overhaul heavy equipment and trucks, including emergency vehicles, park maintenance, and construction equipment, without supervision.
- Operate hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and read/write English, interpret manufacturers' specifications, organize data, and generate reports.
- Work effectively with customers and vendors, in various environments, weather conditions, and on weekends.
Job Prerequisites, Licenses, & Certifications
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. full-time.
- State of Michigan Class "B" commercial driver's license with B endorsement.
- State certification in two or more of the following: HD Engine Repair, HD Braking Systems, HD Suspension & Steering Systems, HD Electrical Systems.
Special Requirements: Possess small and large hand tools, rolling tool storage, and power/air tools necessary for all assigned work.
