Job summary

Columbia University is seeking a Heavy Cleaner Floater to provide custodial services across the Morningside and CUIMC campuses. The role requires cleaning, moving items, and reporting building issues in a 40-hour week with a 3pm–11:30pm schedule.

Responsibilities include operating cleaning equipment, maintaining bathrooms/kitchens, and handling trash, floors, and surfaces. Must meet minimum qualifications and be able to work all shifts, with potential overtime and emergency coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Good communication skills are required.
• Must be physically fit to do extensive walking, stair climbing, lifting (maximum of 50lbs.), carrying, and overhead work.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

• Sweep and mop entrance lobby, stairwells and elevator landings; polish surfaces.
• Wash walls and clean bathrooms and kitchens; remove spots and shampoo carpets.
• Dispose of trash and recycling; manage exterior areas and drains.
• Receive, store and safekeep janitorial materials and equipment; perform other duties as assigned.
• May respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and may work overtime.

Position Summary

The Heavy Cleaner Floater is a position in the Facilities Operations department, which provides high-qualitycustodial services to any academic, research, undergraduate/graduate, and administrative areas/units on theColumbia University Morningside and CUIMC campuses.

Responsibilities

The Heavy Cleaner (Floater) will consistently and appropriately clean the building. The Heavy Cleaner (Floater) will move materials and furniture as required; report building malfunctions as instructed, i.e. power failures, leaks, building equipment, and any other damages; operate any/all motor-cleaning equipment to strip, buff and wax floors, stairwells and corridors; sweep and mop entrance lobby, stairwells and elevator landings; polish marble or brass; wash walls and blackboards; clean mirrors, glass partitions, banisters and mailboxes, windowsills and baseboards in common area and dust assigned areas. The Heavy Cleaner (Floater) will also clean all bathrooms and kitchens; remove spots and shampoo carpets; sweep and wash with hose exterior sidewalk, steps and courtyard; dispose of trash and recycling as directed by supervisor or management; clean compactor room; check all drains and remove debris and inspect, restock, and clean all areas of the building. Additionally, the Heavy Cleaner (Floater) will remove ice and snow and de-ice areas; receive and store 55-gallon drums, household supplies, and equipment; be responsible for the safekeeping, minor repairs, and preservation of all janitorial materials and equipment and perform other duties as assigned. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, may be required to respond to any emergency on a 24-hour basis, and may be required to work overtime.
