Overview

Job Summary This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC), Facility Maintenance Division. The mission of the DOC is to ensure public safety for citizens of the District of Columbia by providing an orderly, safe and secure and humane environment for the confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced inmates, while providing meaningful opportunities for community reintegration.

This position also entails maintaining, inspecting, installing and repairing equipment and components used for heating and air conditioning (HVAC). The incumbent performs skilled mechanical maintenance in refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities, preventative maintenance, and routine servicing of equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
• Conduct regular preventative maintenance inspections of refrigeration units and isolated heating, ventilating units, including boilers and gas/electric air conditioning equipment.
• Read, troubleshoot, repair, and/or install heating units and systems, including oil or gas-fired boilers (low and high pressure), steam production or turbine and generator power plants; calibrate gauges, thermostats and thermometers.
• Install, maintain and repair steam traps, pressure-reducing valves, heat exchangers, and steam heating systems.
• Ensure hazardous materials and waste are handled or processed within operating guidelines; containers are sealed and hazardous materials are disposed of properly.

Working Conditions / Environment

Some work assignments are indoors where the incumbent is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as heating and air conditioning systems, walk-in freezer units, etc. Occasionally, work is outside on building rooftops, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Personal protective equipment may be worn when there is exposure to toxic gases and refrigerants, chemicals, heat, steam, contact with heat system parts, and odors. Potential safety hazards include cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respirator exposures. Repeated or concentrated exposure to refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.

• Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. May be required to work on weekends as needed.
