Job description

The Stationary Fireperson 2nd Class is responsible for firing boilers and controlling the generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating and power at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. This role also involves maintaining the hospital's central chilling plant to ensure cooling as needed.

This position reports to the Lead Stationary Engineer and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent (including vocational school diploma)
• Licensure as a Fireman 2nd Class in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
• MA Hoisting License
• Three to five years of experience firing steam boilers
• Basic computer skills

Essential Job Functions:

1. Fire, control, and tend high-pressure steam boilers burning natural gas, oil, and wood chips to ensure a continuous supply of steam for heating, power, laundry, and sterilization.
2. Conduct tests to monitor water conditions, stack temperature, and control water levels in boilers or chilling towers, ensuring proper distribution of heat, power, or cooling.
3. Operate front-end loader for wood chip movement as needed.
4. Rake fire-box grate, dump ash in sluice pit for quenching, and remove cooled ash for disposal.
5. Clean, lubricate, and assist in repairs and preventive maintenance of equipment.
6. Follow safety procedures, report unusual conditions, and maintain a clean work area.
7. Adhere to hospital and departmental policies, confidentiality, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
8. Engage in professional development activities such as seminars, workshops, and conferences.
9. Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
10. Attend required meetings and perform additional duties as assigned.
