Job summary

Hocon Gas, Inc. is seeking an energetic Heating Oil Technician to diagnose, service, and repair oil-fired heating systems in homes and small businesses. You will perform routine maintenance, respond to emergencies, and help ensure safe, compliant operation.

Ideal candidates have CT licensing or equivalent certification, a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to work on-call during peak season. The role requires physical work and professional customer communication.

When a customer’s heat goes down, especially in winter, it’s more than an inconvenience, it’s urgent. As a Heating Oil Technician, you are the person customers rely on to restore comfort, safety, and peace of mind. Your expertise directly protects homes and businesses and reinforces Hocon Gas's reputation for dependable, preventative service done right the first time.

What You’ll Actually Do in Your First 30 Days

• Complete onboarding, safety training, and any required licensing or certification refreshers
• Shadow experienced technicians to learn Hocon service procedures, customer expectations, and documentation standards
• Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleanings, inspections, and basic repairs under supervision
• Begin independently completing service tickets and entering accurate notes with support from the team

What Success Looks Like in Your First 90 Days

Within your first three months, you are independently diagnosing and servicing oil‑fired heating systems, completing clean, accurate service documentation, and responding professionally to both routine and emergency calls. You understand local codes and safety standards, manage your time effectively across service calls, and know when to troubleshoot independently versus escalating complex issues.

Core Responsibilities

• Diagnose, service, and repair residential and light commercial oil‑fired heating equipment
• Perform preventative maintenance including tune‑ups, cleanings, and safety inspections
• Respond to no‑heat and emergency service calls, including participation in an on‑call rotation
• Accurately complete service orders, work notes, and parts billing each day
• Maintain service vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe working condition
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, environmental regulations, and local codes
• Immediately report incidents, safety concerns, or accidents to the General Manager
• Perform physical work including lifting, carrying, bending, and working in confined or mechanical spaces

Must Have

• State of Connecticut oil burner technician license or equivalent certification (S-2 or B-2 preferred)
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Prior hands‑on experience servicing oil‑fired heating systems
• Ability to independently diagnose and repair heating equipment
• Willingness to work on‑call and outside normal business hours during peak heating season
• Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 75 lbs

Nice to Have

• Experience with multiple burner manufacturers and control systems
• HVAC or plumbing background
• Strong customer communication skills and professional presence
• Basic computer proficiency for service ticketing and documentation

Education

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training and experience.

Pay Rate:

$45+ per hour (depending on experience)
