Indiana University Bloomington is seeking a qualified Heat Mechanic to maintain and repair boilers, furnaces, and HVAC systems on campus. The role requires 5 years of journey-level experience or a related certificate, with a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by IU.

Work involves inspecting controls, installing thermostats, and ensuring safe, efficient operation across facilities in Bloomington. The position reports to Facility Operations under CPF.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years verifiable journey level experience in the heat field or a certificate in DOL apprenticed heat trade.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University at hire.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and tests controls and systems to detect and locate malfunctions.
  • Replaces, repairs or rebuilds, and adjusts valves, piping, steam traps, steam pipes, air dryers and compressors, convectors, and humidifiers.
  • Installs and repairs thermostats and sensors.
  • Maintains and repairs boilers and furnaces in various sized buildings.
  • Checks water levels in steam and hot water boilers including water treatment.
  • Services, repairs, and rebuilds pumps and compressors; checks gas and air pressure in boilers and furnaces.

FACILITY OPERATIONS-IUB (BL-PHYP-IUBLA)

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations, maintains our physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington. As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operations provides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating a beautiful, well-functioning campus.

Job Responsibilities
  • Inspects and tests controls and systems to detect and locate malfunctions. Replaces, repairs or rebuilds, and adjusts valves, piping, steam traps, steam pipes, air dryers and compressors, convectors, and humidifiers.
  • Installs and repairs thermostats and sensors. Replaces, repairs, and cleans convectors, and balance system air flow. Maintains and repairs boilers and furnaces in various sized buildings. Checks water levels in steam and hot water boilers including water treatment.
  • Services, repairs, and rebuilds pumps and compressors. Checks gas and air pressure in boilers and furnaces. Changes out and repairs blowers. Cleans boilers. Troubleshoots boilers and systems.
  • Rods out/cleans heat exchangers/tube bundles. Wires controls, thermostats, and motors. Installs pressure and temperature controls. Services forced air furnaces.
  • Works as a team with refrigeration mechanics in maintaining, servicing, and repairing HVAC equipment. Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
  • Participates in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.
  • Drives vehicle as needed.
Education
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
