This position averages approximately 15 hours per week, depending on departmental needs and hospital census. The technician may be scheduled for more or fewer hours as needed and must have flexible availability.
Position Description
A Hearing Technician in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is responsible to help assist with the universal newborn hearing screening (NBHS) program at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). The NBHS at TGH is a federally-mandated program that requires all newborns (in both the nursery and NICU) to receive a hearing screening prior to discharge from the hospital. The technician will work as part of the NBHS team which consists of a licensed audiologist and USF doctor of audiology student screeners that provide screenings, educate parents and families on the relevance of hearing screenings and early intervention, assist with record keeping of hearing screen results, and assist in reporting screening data to the Florida Department of Health. The ideal candidate will have a willingness and ability to learn and operate hearing screening equipment, attend all required trainings, possess basic computer skills and must be able to lift or move up to 15lbs. The NBHS program operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Duties Include
- Assists in conducting newborn hearing screenings on all infants in the nursery and NICU prior to discharge from the hospital, coordinates post-discharge follow up care as needed utilizing appropriate procedures and computer technology.
- Works directly with nursing staff, patients, and parents to communicate relevance of hearing screening and early intervention to support positive outcomes; provide screening results to parents.
- Maintain and use hearing screening equipment, assist with database management. Interacts as needed with various hospital departments; Performs duties in accordance with the policies and procedures of USF Audiology NBHS program, hospitals, and respective departments.
- Upholds the code of conduct and compliance policies.
- Upon completion of training; has thorough knowledge of procedural variables and instrumentation in the application of Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) testing.
Minimum Qualifications
- This position requires a High School Diploma
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- One (1) or more years of healthcare or childcare training/experience, or related college curriculum
- CPR Certified
- Bilingual
- Experience related to audiology and/or newborn hearing screenings
This position may be subject to a Level 1 or Level 2 criminal background check.
