Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC is seeking a Cook to prepare a wide range of meals for patients and staff, following standardized recipes and production sheets to ensure safety and quality.

Under the direction of the Executive Chef and Production Supervisor of Food Services, you will bring care and consistency to every dish while adhering to hospital policies and health department standards, including therapeutic diets and portion control.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Three (3) years of successful work experience as a cook.
• Current and active food certification.
• Demonstrated knowledge of food safety and sanitation policies and applicable local and federal health department standards.
• Knowledge of therapeutic diets and the ability to read production sheets, recognize a variety of foods, serve correct portions, and scale recipes.
• Ability to prepare, hold, and store foods safely and sanitarily per hospital policies and standards.
• Ability to operate safely and clean a variety of kitchen equipment.
• Exceptional customer service skills and ability to respond to customers in a courteous and prompt manner.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions closely.

Responsibilities

• Follow standardized recipes to prepare foods according to policies and health standards.
• Operate kitchen equipment to measure, mix, and prepare ingredients and trim meats.
• Assemble prepared foods on trays for general and modified diets using production sheets.
• Taste, adjust seasonings, estimate food requirements, and maintain production records.
• Obtain recipes and ingredients from storage and prepare foods per production schedule.
• Monitor temperatures, control heat, and ensure proper portion sizes and garnishes.
• Store and label food safely; keep work area clean and organized.
• Provide feedback to improve recipes and food quality.
