Job summary

UC San Diego Health seeks an Assistant Fire Marshal to enforce fire and life-safety codes across hospitals, clinics, and labs. You will conduct complex plan reviews, perform field inspections, and ensure compliance with CCR Titles 19/24, NFPA standards, and HCAI mandates.

Under OSFM MOA, you may serve as DCFM after approval, coordinating with local authorities and regulators to maintain hospital readiness and accreditation standards. Extensive experience in healthcare environments is required.

Qualifications

• Nine years of progressively responsible professional experience in complex fire prevention, plan review, and code enforcement, preferably in healthcare or institutional environments.
• Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, Construction Management, Civil/Mechanical Engineering, or related field, plus five years of related experience/training.
• Must be nominated and approved as Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) by the University and OSFM within 6–12 months of appointment.
• OSFM Fire Inspector credentials and Fire Plans Examiner credentials.
• Thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and related standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct technical plan reviews of complex healthcare facility construction, modifications, and fire protection systems.
• Direct and perform field inspections across UCSD Health properties for new construction and renovations.
• Plan, schedule, and conduct mandatory hospital fire drills and develop training programs for staff.
• Inspect existing facilities for Title 19 compliance.
• Manage hospital fire drills across varied shifts and occupancies per TJC, CMS, and Title 19 standards.
