Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems is seeking a Construction Project Manager to plan, organize, implement and complete capital construction projects. You will coordinate with architects, engineers, internal/external customers, and purchasing to fund and bid work.

The role involves managing scope, budget, and schedules, leading project teams, and possibly working nights or weekends to meet deadlines while ensuring infection prevention requirements are met on site.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in health-care and/or institutional construction.
  • Knowledge of architecture, engineering, cost management, design and project management principles.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills with broad stakeholder interaction.
  • Ability to lead or follow project teams through programming‑design‑bidding‑contracting‑construction‑occupancy closeout.
  • Independent work with little supervision as owner’s representative.

  • Occasional night and weekend work may be required depending on project type.

Job Overview

The Construction Project Manager plans, organizes, implements and completes capital construction projects in accordance with owner requirements. The manager coordinates work of multiple entities, including internal and external customers as well as architects and engineers, and works with purchasing and finance to fund and bid the work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement scope of work, interacting closely with code officials, multiple contractors, in‑house inspectors, special inspectors, end users and other intra‑agency entities.
  • Serve as the owner’s representative, ensuring project success measured by scope adherence, budget, schedule, and end‑user satisfaction.
  • Track budget adherence, monitor construction schedule fulfillment, monitor site adherence to owner infection prevention requirements, and identify and address scope creep.
  • Oversee daily work activities of general contractors, project schedule and budget compliance.
  • May be required to work nights and weekends depending on project type.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire

None required for hire; however, HCC or CHC is desirable.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment

CHC required within the first two years of employment.

Experience – Required
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in health‑care and/or institutional construction, including large, complex, and fast‑track projects, some with special funding arrangements.
  • In‑depth knowledge of architecture, engineering, cost management (estimating, budgeting, monitoring), design, construction and project management principles.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills and ability to interact effectively with a broad range of individuals.
  • Ability to lead or follow project teams through the complete programming‑design‑bidding‑contracting‑construction‑occupancy closeout process.
  • Independent work with little direct supervision, acting as the owner’s representative and applying knowledge, skills and abilities.
Experience – Preferred
  • Professional certification in one's field (AIA, PE, CMAA, etc.).

Independent Actions Required

Track budget adherence, monitor construction schedule fulfillment, monitor site adherence to the owner’s infection prevention requirements, and identify and address scope creep.

Oversee daily work activities of general contractors and ensure project schedule and budget adherence.

Additional Position Requirements

Project managers may need to be on the construction site some nights and weekends, depending on project type.
