Job Description

Greet visitors and assist them as needed. Provide clerical support to the clinical team in carrying out daily patient care functions. Serve as a communication link for processing information/requests among patients, staff, visitors, physicians, and other departments or agencies. Responsible for data entry related to patient functions/processes and managing (maintaining) medical records and related forms from admission to discharge. Communication is culturally sensitive and age-specific.

Additional Responsibilities: HUC Trainer: Provides onboarding for all TCH new hire HUCS.

Responsibilities
Communication
  • Keep Clinical manager/staff informed of issues.
  • Meet and greet patients, visitors, staff.
  • Answer patient call lights promptly and politely.
  • Use appropriate communication systems.
  • Maintain admit/discharge logs (census cards).
  • Obtain signatures on consent forms.
  • Make copies of advanced directives for charts.
  • Facilitate communication with ancillary departments.
  • Communicate professionally with hospital departments and physician offices.
  • Resource for supplies and medical records location.
  • Adhere to hospital customer service standards.
  • Handle STAT calls appropriately.
  • Complete consults in Epic accurately.
Computer Responsibilities
  • Timely admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Maintain manual order entry systems during downtime.
  • Prepare requisitions for services.
  • Record unit charges as appropriate.
  • Use NAVICARE and assist physicians with Epic.
  • Run daily audits/reports from Epic as directed.
Chart Responsibilities
  • Maintain current and old charts.
  • Place forms and results in charts timely.
  • Copy and retrieve medical records as needed.
  • Keep charts in designated order.
  • Assist with chart stuffing as needed.
Environment/Supplies/Equipment
  • Monitor tube system.
  • Operate fax, copier, printer, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Order and verify supplies and equipment.
  • Type and file for the unit.
  • Run errands and courier as needed.
  • Assist with maintenance requests and notify engineering of malfunctions.
Unit Responsibilities/Accountability
  • Maintain a positive attitude and serve as a role model.
  • Follow through on job functions timely and appropriately.
  • Participate in governance and performance activities.
  • Attend or review minutes of unit meetings.
  • Maintain equipment and assist in emergencies.
  • Follow chain of command and complete assignments.
  • Manage patient discharge materials and communication tools.
  • Ensure proper charting and faxing of discharge summaries.
  • Maintain supply levels and equipment.
  • Enter transport requests and organize nurse’s station.

Demonstrate competencies addressing the developmental, physical, psychosocial, mental, emotional, social, cultural, religious, language, and literacy needs of patients across the lifespan.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills: High School diploma or GED required. Additional PCA or medical/surgical training preferred. Previous HUC experience of 3 years for trainer role. Must read at 9th-grade level, do math at 7th-grade level, type at 25 WPM, and pass basic computer literacy. Skills in medical terminology are preferred. Teamwork and delegated duties acceptance required.

Licenses & Certifications: HUC certification and BLS certification preferred.
