Job summary

East Hawaii Region of Hawai`i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator I in the Surgical Unit at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. You will ensure seamless communication among patients, families, nurses, physicians and staff to support high-quality care.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Two years of clerical/administrative experience involving office procedures, communication, and recordkeeping.
  • Substitution: an associate or bachelor's degree may substitute for all required experience.
  • Knowledge & Skills: medical terminology and EMR systems; strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills; ability to prioritize tasks; proficiency with MS Word and Excel.

As a Health Unit Coordinator I in the Surgical Unit, you will help ensure patients, families, nurses, physicians, and support departments remain connected through effective communication, coordination, and administrative support.

This position is ideal for an organized, customer-focused professional who thrives in a fast-paced healthcare environment and enjoys being an essential member of a collaborative patient care team. The position supports both surgical and pediatric services and requires the ability to prioritize responsibilities and respond effectively during emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and other unit activities while ensuring all required documentation is completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain patient charts, unit logs, electronic medical records, and other documentation while communicating important information to the appropriate clinical staff. Serve as the communication hub for the nursing unit by assisting patients, visitors, physicians, and staff and directing inquiries to the appropriate resources.
  • Support staffing and scheduling activities by assisting with staffing coordination, schedule changes, staff notifications, and time and attendance functions.
  • Monitor unit supplies, maintain inventory, prepare reports, and ensure the nursing station remains organized and compliant with regulatory requirements. Participate in staff development, emergency response activities, regulatory compliance initiatives, and other departmental responsibilities that support high-quality patient care.
Qualifications

  • Experience: Two (2) years of clerical or administrative experience involving office procedures, communication, and recordkeeping
  • Substitution: An Associates or Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for all of the required Experience.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Familiarity with medical terminology and electronic medical record systems
    • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment
    • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel)

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
