Health Unit Coordinator-Delnor Medical/Surgical Unit Part Time Days

Position overview: This is a 32-bed Medical/Surgical unit. The schedule involves rotating two and three 8-hour shifts per week, from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) required.

The Health Unit Coordinator embodies the mission, vision, and values of NMHC, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The role involves performing unit-based reception, clerical, medical record, and patient registration functions. The Coordinator must prioritize tasks and handle emergencies calmly. Effective communication with staff, patients, and families, serving as a liaison between units and departments, is essential. The Coordinator manages overall unit workflow in collaboration with the charge RN and/or assistant manager.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a friendly, professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers.
  • Address questions and concerns promptly, or direct them appropriately.
  • Assist patients and visitors with directions.
  • Use effective service recovery skills to resolve issues.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and respect diverse opinions.
  • Use resources efficiently and manage work schedules effectively.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, physicians, and other departments.
  • Coordinate work with managers and charge nurses.
  • Retrieve lab results and bring them to the attention of the caring nurse.
  • Interact professionally with patients and families, providing explanations and reassurance.
  • Prepare medical records for admissions and disassemble charts upon discharge.
  • Ensure proper record assembly and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Transcribe and verify orders accurately in the computer system.
  • Seek learning opportunities and participate in professional development.
  • Demonstrate computer competence for order entry, documentation, and results management.
  • Operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Be flexible, organized, and capable of functioning under stress.
  • Answer phones, monitor security systems, and communicate effectively.
  • Prioritize tasks using critical thinking skills.
  • Monitor patient status and manage census data accurately.
  • Register patients and conduct telephone screenings appropriately.
  • Order supplies and print necessary forms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic computer skills
  • Effective communication skills in English (verbal and written)
  • Ability to use interpreter services effectively
  • Excellent customer service skills

Preferred:

  • One year of experience in a relevant clinical setting
