Job summary

The Wilmington VA Medical Center is actively recruiting for a Health Technician to join Patient Care Services. The selected candidate must meet all requirements by the closing date 2026-09-28, and will perform phlebotomy, specimen labeling, and related lab support duties.

Preferred candidates have 3–5 years in Emergency Department or phlebotomy, BLS, and experience assisting with medical procedures. This role emphasizes teamwork and adherence to aseptic technique in a clinical setting.

Qualifications

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04, including phlebotomy and aseptic technique.
• Education may substitute experience; a full 4-year bachelor's degree meets GS-5 requirements.
• Combination: education beyond the first 60 semester hours plus relevant experience counts toward qualification.

The Wilmington VA Medical Center is recruiting to fill one (1) Health Technician vacancy. The Health Technician will function in Patient Care Services. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/28/2026.

• Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: understands written medical material, perform phlebotomy, uses aseptic technique, labels specimens, transports them to lab, and participate in teamwork and unit operations. OR,
• Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor's degree, in an accredited college or university, meets the GS-5 level requirements for many positions covered by this standard. OR,
• Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to one (1) year of specialized experience.

Preferred Experience: 3-5 years Emergency Department and phlebotomy experience. BLS Certification and experience assisting with medical procedures and exams.
