Position Overview

Swampscott Middle School is seeking an energetic, dedicated, and reflective Middle School Health Teacher to deliver instruction to students in Grades 5 through 8. In this role, your primary function will be to administer a dynamic, skills-based curriculum that fosters health literacy and empowers students to adopt health-enhancing behaviors, make informed choices, and advocate for themselves and others.

Because middle school health education addresses critical personal, social, and emotional topics requiring structured guidance and consistent adult mentorship, punctuality and reliable, consistent attendance are essential to the success of this role. Essential Functions

Instructional Leadership & Skills-Based Health Curriculum

• Health Literacy Focus: Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate health lessons focused on empowering students to access, understand, appraise, apply, and advocate for health information and services.

• Standards-Based Skills: Implement a skills-based health curriculum grounded in the National Health Education Standards (accessing information, analyzing influences, interpersonal communication, decision-making, goal-setting, self-management, and advocacy).

• Effective Delivery: Present material explicitly and connect new concepts to prior knowledge. Differentiate instruction using a variety of pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of all learners.

• Assessment & Alignment: Measure student understanding using self-assessments, frequent formative checks, and periodic summative evaluations. Review assessment data with colleagues to develop interventions and extensions.

• Interdisciplinary Connection: Collaborate with health services, counseling, and classroom teachers to enhance health instruction and connect learning to broader school-wide wellness initiatives.

Classroom Management & Inclusive Environment

• Positive Culture: Build respectful relationships with each student, foster positive peer interactions, promote self-discipline, and maintain a firm stance against dangerous or destructive behaviors.

• Expectations & Routines: Manage classroom operations with high academic and behavioral expectations, clear routines, and proactive preventative strategies.

• Special Populations: Review, understand, and implement all Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Accommodation Plans for students within the class.

Professional Collaboration & Communication

• Family Engagement: Communicate student academic, social, and behavioral progress to parents and guardians in a respectful, transparent, and responsive manner.

• Professional Growth: Participate in professional development, reflect on instructional practices, implement feedback, and collaborate with colleagues to improve student outcomes.

• Professional Reliability: Maintain strict punctuality and daily attendance to ensure instructional continuity, meaningful student support, and departmental alignment.

• Additional Duties: Fulfill assigned supervisory duties and assume other responsibilities assigned by the building principal in accordance with collective bargaining provisions.

Qualifications

• Licensure: Valid Massachusetts DESE License in Health/Family and Consumer Sciences (PreK–8 or 5–12).

• Education & Expertise: Bachelor’s degree required; strong background in skills-based health education, health literacy, and middle school curriculum design preferred.

• Competencies:

• Demonstrated understanding of early adolescent growth and development.

• Proficiency in data-driven instruction, formative assessment, and classroom management.

• Strong collaborative, interpersonal, and communication skills.

• Compliance: Successful completion of a Massachusetts CORI and fingerprint-based national criminal background check.
