Ideal Candidate Statement

An ideal candidate for the Health Science Skills Laboratory Coordinator position is a collaborative and dependable professional who works effectively with faculty while also operating independently. They ensure all nursing laboratory setups and demonstrations are fully prepared, functional, and aligned with instructional needs, while collaborating with faculty to meet student learning outcomes.

The successful candidate has a strong foundation in evidence-based registered nursing skills with the ability to set up, troubleshoot, and maintain college-level labs and equipment. They are detail-oriented and resourceful, able to interpret technical manuals, perform routine maintenance, and coordinate repairs when needed.

They bring experience supporting and collaborating with simulation personnel while maintaining a safe, organized, and compliant lab environment, including proper hazardous waste handling and adherence to safety regulations. Their work reflects strong organizational and documentation skills, ensuring equipment and materials are properly stored, inventoried, and accessible.

In addition, the ideal candidate effectively manages lab documentation, purchasing, and vendor coordination within budget, and demonstrates strong communication skills to support faculty and improve lab instruction. They remain current with emerging technologies and practices in nursing and simulation actively contributing to innovative and effective learning experiences.

Position Description

Under the direction of the Academic Dean and in consultation with the Program Director of Nursing the incumbent, plans, organizes, coordinates and implements the psychomotor application component of the professional curricula to accomplish program objectives; Demonstrates and directs students individually and in group settings to properly perform nursing procedures in the Nursing Skills and Simulation Labs at Ohlone College and at any clinically affiliated sites where Ohlone students provide patient care as part of the educational experience. Consults and coordinates with the Program Director of Nursing and Respiratory Therapy in ordering of skills kits and requested lab supplies.

This is a 10-month position.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plans, organizes, coordinates and implements the psychomotor application component of the professional curricula to accomplish nursing program outcomes. Provide recommendations and implementations to increase the effectiveness of demonstrations and student educational experiences including the scheduling, planning and safe preparation of nursing laboratory and simulation scenarios while ordering organizing, maintaining and setting up necessary supplies, equipment and classroom layout.


2. In collaboration with the course faculty, supports instruction of students, individually and in group settings, with nursing practices, procedures and principles in the Nursing Skills/Simulation lab, and the clinical setting. Monitor student educational experiences and assure compliance with safety protocols and laboratory policies and procedures. Provide constructive student feedback for improved performance and competency during skills check-offs.


3. As a Clinical Teaching Assistant (CTA) in a clinical setting, maintains continuity of the learning environment by ensuing nursing students demonstrate accurate and best-practice psychomotor skills previously learned in the Skills/Simulation labs that reflect weekly student learning outcomes. Collaborates with all course instructors to provide constructive student feedback in the evaluation of the individual student’s clinical performance. Maintains and complies with professional clinical health records as required by the clinical facility. Supports, guides, and constructively critiques nursing students’ performance related to direct patient care at onsite clinical rotations including assisting students in the use of site computers and electronic medical records.


4. Collaborates with simulation faculty and support staff in planning, preparing and participating in educational scenarios to meet the course learning outcomes. Engage in the delivery of scenario during simulation including constructive feedback to aid in the individual student’s and group evaluation.


5. Orient and train skills lab assistant/student instructional aids in preparation, content and delivery of skills lab to meet the student learning outcomes in scheduled and open skills sessions. Collaborate with adjunct faculty, lab support staff, and clinical teaching assistance in the planning and teaching of small group lab scenarios in the Skills Lab to include proper lab operations, implementation of student performance, and completion of targeted skills of the course in the allotted scheduled time.


6. Provide tutoring assistance to students outside of classroom hours; schedule and implement open laboratory hours and coordinate tutoring sessions with faculty as required; Collaborates with the faculty and support staff to provide one-on-one remediation and tutoring to individual students who are on clinical contract, previously failed, return from temporary leave or recommended for skills review.


7. Coordinate and oversee the maintenance and operation of the Nursing Skills and Simulation laboratories; order, store and inventory supplies and equipment; organize and clean equipment, supplies and labs; assure the safe operation of testing equipment and troubleshoot problems; arrange for repair and replacement of damaged equipment with appropriate personnel as required; issue and retrieve loaner equipment and inspect for damage.


8. Generate, maintain and update Nursing Skills and Simulation Laboratory Coordinator manuals. Provide technical information and assistance to the Program Director of Nursing; assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs. Collaborate with nursing faculty and the Program Director of Nursing in the formulation and development of nursing psychomotor skills; assigned clinical activities; program policies and procedures.


9. Coordinate and plan the development of the annual preliminary budget Nursing Skills Lab budget; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; research, forecast, select and recommend products to assure accomplishment of program outcomes. Communicate with vendors for pricing and specifics associated with desired equipment and supplies. In collaboration with the Director of Nursing control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations.


10. Serve on the Nursing Learning Resource Committee with nursing faculty members to determine learning and cost-effective additions, changes or surplus of supplies /equipment congruent with current clinical practice; draft minutes.


11. Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of the College’s students, faculty, staff, and community.


12. Effectively engage and support historically disproportionately impacted groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.


13. Assist nursing faculty with clinical onboarding, including managing health records and immunizations.


14. Attend department and division meetings as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

An Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in nursing with five (5) years of experience in an acute care nursing clinical program;

Valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN);

Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Desirable Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Physical Characteristics

This position requires physical abilities needed to work in a standard office setting, including but not limited to: standing and/or sitting for prolonged periods; occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and twisting; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling light and moderate amounts of weight; operating office equipment which may require repeated fine motor skills (e.g.: keyboard use); and the ability to communicate in written and verbal forms. The position requires vision and hearing in normal ranges (with or without correction) sufficient to operate any assigned equipment and the ability to clearly communicate with others in written and verbal forms.

In addition to the above, this position will necessitate working in a lab environment with and/or around chemicals and other fume-generating hazardous substances and objects. The work will require the safe handling of lab equipment and supplies, including objects of substantial weight and size.

Salary Placement

Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) Salary Range 47. Initial salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Classified employees advance one step on the salary schedule each year.

This is a 10-month position. The position requires selecting 43 designated unpaid non-work days per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
