Summary:

The Health & Safety Specialist is a critical role in fostering a safe, healthy, and productive workplace. This position champions proactive safety practices, leads efforts to identify and mitigate risks, and ensures that every employee returns home safe each day. This role empowers teams to operate with confidence, knowing that their safety is supported by a thoughtful, consistent, and people-valued approach both at the workplace and in the community.

What you’ll be contributing:

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.

  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Monitors facilities and processes to adhere to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) guidelines and eliminating industrial accidents.

  • Assists, evaluates, and continuously improves the facility's safety program to achieve and maintain zero-harm goals.

  • Observes random department audits and walks to ensure they are conducted with rigor and intensity.

  • Works with supervisors and other plant personnel to develop plant safety procedures for their work areas/tasks and ensures that they are consistently followed.

  • Ensures employee's annual new hire tasks and periodic or refresher safety training are completed, documented, and organized electronically and/or physically as instructed by the Safety Manager or designee.

  • Maintains plant's incident database and ensures monthly audits are completed.

  • Ensures all safety binders are kept current and maintains all SDS’s and other plant-related safety records by all company procedures and requirements.

  • Conducts or coordinates all employee safety orientations, classroom safety training, and practical hands-on plant safety training.

  • Monitors, audits, and documents Contractor Safety Management System Requirements in coordination with the Safety Manager.

  • Works toward compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws and regulations.

  • Accompanies inspectors during inspections and maintains all required records regarding safety activities/regulations.

  • Serves as liaison with the Safety Manager, the plant, and safety regulatory agencies in coordination with plant and corporate safety personnel.

  • Facilitates the Health and Safety Committee and oversees plant safety project work and teams.

  • Continuously strives to learn and understand plant processes.

  • Assist in detailed and thorough investigations for all accidents, incidents, injuries, or near misses.

  • Recommends and applies safety improvements in the operations.

  • Leads in implementing new systems or processes.

  • Inspire and reinforce company Life Saving Rule behaviors across all levels of the organization through education, engagement, and leadership.

  • Maintain alignment with MSHA and other applicable regulations, helping the organization meet and exceed legal safety standards.

  • Assess adherence to company procedures, programs, and Human Performance processes, as well as state and federal regulations.

  • Help investigate incidents and prepare incident reports and safety alerts in a manner that supports a Human Performance Culture.

  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement practical, preventive solutions that minimize the potential for injury or harm.

  • Lead hands-on training and safety briefings that equip employees with the knowledge and confidence to work safely.

  • Respond with empathy and precision during investigations, ensuring lessons are learned and improvements are recognized.

  • Collaborate with leadership, supervisors, and frontline staff to integrate safety into daily operations and strategic planning.

  • Coordinate industrial hygiene testing, including noise and dust surveys, and retention of data into the company database for terminal locations.

To succeed in this position, you will need:

  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.

  • Minimum 4 Year/ Bachelors Degree in industrial hygiene, safety management, or related field.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the safety and health field in a cement, mining, or related industry.

  • Ability to solve problems with high attention to detail and accuracy

  • Ability to work and maintain composure under pressure

  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations

  • Ability to use and maintain databases used to store MSHA citation records as well as industrial hygiene data, injury and accident investigation data, and behavioral safety

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at a conclusion

  • Ability to work with company and plant policies and objectives

  • Ability to refer to plant Safety Manager or corporate safety personnel when clarification or interpretation of organization policy

  • Assist with MSHA and safety-related documents per the Safety Manager's request
