Job summary

Utica Community School District in Sterling Heights, Michigan is seeking a Health Resource Paraprofessional to support students with personal health needs and chronic conditions. This full-time role requires compassion, confidentiality, and the ability to maintain composure in stressful situations while assisting with daily living activities and health-related interventions under district supervision.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Ability to work with medically challenged students.
• Experience with chronic health diseases is preferred.
• Assist students with personal needs including hygiene and clothing.
• Maintain composure in stressful situations.
• Physically able to run, walk, lift, and respond to health needs.
• Willingness to be trained in health-related awareness and interventions.
• Willingness to be assigned to multiple sites as needed.
• Able to work with epinephrine, blood testing, insulin, seizures, and feeding tubes.
• Willingness to assist with toileting and hygiene.
• Support in non-instructional times in classroom or lunchroom.
• Documentation and parent contact will be required.

Job Description

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Demonstrated understanding of student needs, ability and desire to work with medically challenged population.
• Personal or health-related experience with children with chronic health diseases is preferred.
• Assist student(s) with personal needs, including but not limited to hygiene, diapering, toileting and clothing.
• Ability to maintain composure and communication during stressful situations.
• May need good physical flexibility such as ability to run, walk, lift and/or respond to other physical needs.
• Willingness to be trained in area(s) of student health related awareness and intervention. Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine administration; asthma and administration of inhalers, using spacers and administering nebulizer treatments; diabetes and blood glucose testing, urine ketone analysis and insulin administration via injection and insulin pump; seizures and oral, intranasal and rectal rescue medications; medication administration; other types of procedures including catheterization, gastric tube feedings, and tracheostomy suctioning; and other areas of health-related support.
• Willingness to accept assignment at multiple and potentially differing sites and locations depending on individual student needs as determined by the District.
• Ability to work with Epipens, blood testing, insulin injections, ports, suctioning, seizures, feeding tube, diastat, medication dispensing and other areas of health-related support.
• Willingness to assist with toileting and/or hygiene assistance, some physicality required.
• Willingness to be assigned as general help during "down-periods" in the classroom, lunchroom, and/or office as designated by the building Principal.
• Documentation and parent contact will be required.
• Characteristics sought include: Child-centered, adaptability, calm demeanor, respect for dignity, patience, confidentiality and ability to alertly focus during times of potential distraction.
• Good attendance required.

Description:
