The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) works to advance the health and well-being of all Californians through prevention, surveillance, policy leadership, and equitable delivery of public health programs. Within CDPH, the Genetic Disease Screening Program (GDSP) operates statewide newborn and prenatal screening services that identify and coordinate follow-up for conditions that, when detected early, can reduce morbidity and improve outcomes for families. The California Prenatal Screening (CA PNS) Program is a core component of GDSP and provides comprehensive prenatal screening services to pregnant individuals served across California’s diverse healthcare landscape.
Guided by California statute and privacy protections for the California Prenatal Screening (CA PNS) Program, GDSP maintains systems for specimen processing, results reporting, data tracking, stakeholder education, and contractor oversight. The CA PNS Program collaborates closely with clinical laboratories, Case Coordination Centers (CCCs), OB/GYN providers, large health systems, and genetic counselors to ensure statewide alignment of operational policies, quality standards, and equitable access to screening services. The CA PNS Program also supports policy development, public education, continuing medical education offerings, and cross-division engagement to enhance provider communication and improve patient experience.
