Job summary

Maryland Department of the Environment seeks a Health Physicist Trainee to assist with inspections, investigations and regulatory activities related to radiation safety. The role includes processing registrations, conducting preventive maintenance and certifications to protect the public and workers from unnecessary exposure.

The position requires a minimum of four years’ radiological hazard experience or a qualifying science degree, plus Maryland driver’s license and teamwork attitude.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years of experience in recognizing, evaluating and controlling radiological hazards.
• Bachelor’s degree substitution possible with 30 credit hours in relevant sciences.
• U.S. Armed Forces service as commissioned officer or specialist can substitute for experience.
• Must possess motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Air and Radiation Administration Radiological Health Program Radiation Machines Division 1800 Washington Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21230.

Main Purpose of Job

The Health Physicist Trainee will receive training to support required inspections, investigations, and other regulatory activities. Duties will include processing registrations, preventive maintenance, and certifications to protect the public and occupational personnel from unnecessary exposure to radiation from x-ray-producing machines. The incumbent will also participate in monthly staff meetings and respond to radiation emergencies as needed.

This Position May Involve The Following Working Conditions

• Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings.
• Exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury.
• Physical demands such as lifting 20 pounds or more, climbing ladders etc.
• Protective equipment—such as safety glasses, gloves, mask during site visits when required.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Four years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

Notes

• Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences for the required experience.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

• A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Science or Physics;
• Strong written and oral communication skills;
• Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
• Experience generating database reports;
• Detailed oriented with strong organizations skills and the ability to prioritize tasks;
• Willingness to work as a team member;
• Experience providing service to customers in a professional setting which must have included personal interaction with members of the general public or other customers.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
