JOB TITLE: Health Office Substitute

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Building Principal and School Nurse Coordinator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Health Office Substitute includes nursing assistants, clinic aides, and EMTs. The Health Office Substitute works under the licensure of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include program management, nursing services, collaboration, health education and professional practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs screenings according to state regulations along with related tasks including: documenting results, parent notification, referrals, and referral follow up;
  • Ensures newly enrolled/current students are in compliance with state regulations such as preschool physicals and up to date immunization records;
  • Administers medications and treatments as delegated by the school nurse once proper training has been completed;
  • Obtains medical orders for procedures and medication administration;
  • Reports major health concerns to the supervising “zone” Registered Nurse and/or School Nurse Coordinator within appropriate time limits;
  • Provides first aid to students with injuries;
  • Reports illnesses and injuries to the “zone” Registered Nurse and/or School Nurse Coordinator for review, care and/or follow-up;
  • Contacts parents of ill or injured students;
  • Maintains confidentiality on student/staff information;
  • Understands and follows HIPAA and FERPA regulations;
  • Maintains a clean and orderly health office;
  • Attends ongoing in-service education programs as deemed appropriate by the School Nurse Coordinator;
  • Documents all encounters in the electronic documentation program;
  • Records health information (screening tests, immunization data, etc);
  • Maintains an up-to-date master file of student health emergency information;
  • Sends notices to parents, tabulates returns and follows up with non-respondents;
  • Distributes information and forms to teachers and administrative staff;
  • Initiates and distributes incident and accident reports according to the school division policy;
  • Completes local and state school reports as required;
  • Orders, inventories, and oversees the storage of first aid and health-related equipment;
  • Provides supervision for sick or injured students until they are placed under their parent/guardian’s care
  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably a C.N.A., C.M.A. or EMT-B; demonstrate sound judgment; ability to communicate with verbal and written language; complete routine training in but not limited to CPR, first aid, routine and emergency medication administration, and diabetes management; demonstrate clerical proficiency.

Work requires reaching, pushing, and pulling, use of hands to grasp, handle or feel, fine manipulation, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
