Job Description:

The Governor's Health Sciences Academy (GHSA) at Alexandria City High School, in partnership with The George Washington University-School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GW-SMHS), offers students the opportunity to pursue one of seven health-related pathways leading to industry certification. All courses are taught for dual enrollment credit through GW-SMHS, allowing students to graduate with 16-18 college credits. Graduates can then choose to enter the workforce or continue higher education. More information can be found on the CTE & Workforce Development website, at ACPS GHSA.

The Health and Medical Sciences teacher will develop students' academic and clinical skills through academic courses, implement, monitor, and evaluate a competency-based program using district-approved curriculum, and document student progress. The teacher will address students' educational needs, provide feedback to students, parents, and administration about progress, expectations, and goals, and collaborate with GW-SMHS colleagues to ensure college requirements are met.

This position reports to an Assistant Principal.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Master's Degree in nursing, biology, chemistry, education, or related health and medical sciences. Dual Enrollment courses will be taught.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Experience: Relevant job experience within a specialized field with increasing responsibilities.
Essential Functions:
  • Develop and update lesson plans, assignments, and assessments in collaboration with GW-SMHS faculty based on the state curriculum.
  • Facilitate clinical placements through collaboration with university and industry partners.
  • Coordinate with administration for industry certification testing.
  • Serve on GHSA sub-committees and attend meetings.
  • Participate in recruiting events, promote the program to prospective students and parents, and engage in Summer Bridge activities, compensated at the standard rate.
  • Review and develop curriculum during summer, compensated accordingly.
  • Organize academy and career activities such as industry speakers and field trips.
  • Teach additional foundation health and medical sciences classes as needed.
  • Support student leadership and civic engagement through organizations like HOSA.
  • Design student assignments to meet diverse learning styles and objectives.
  • Document student progress through various reports and records.
  • Demonstrate classroom and subject-specific teaching methods.
  • Adapt instruction for individualized learning plans.
  • Administer assessments to evaluate student competency and progress.
  • Participate in meetings for communication and planning.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and strategies for improvement.
  • Promote communication with school and agency staff, students, and families.
  • Counsel students to enhance participation and performance.
  • Manage classroom behavior to ensure safety and learning.
  • Report incidents as required by policies and law.
  • Maintain required teacher certifications and industry-related credentials.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
