Description

Under the general direction of the Manager, this position codes diagnosis and procedures for assigned cases. The role requires knowledge of UCLA, AHA - Coding Clinic, and AMA - CPT Assistant guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease pathology, and documented treatments and procedures. The coder assigns ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4/HCPCS codes for patients at UCLA Healthcare, ensuring accurate reimbursement and high-quality data. Responsibilities include abstracting coded data, understanding reporting requirements, addressing coding questions, and reconciling discrepancies. The position also involves working on denials and requires specialized knowledge for Nuc Med and PET visits.

Salary Range

$56.95-$70.81/hourly

Qualifications

Required:

  • CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H certification
  • At least 3 years of experience in surgical procedural and ambulatory care coding, with proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4/HCPCS, and modifier usage
  • Minimum of 5 years of acute multi-specialty hospital coding experience
  • At least 2 years of pro-fee and facility coding experience
  • Experience as a Medical Record Abstractor
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology
  • Ability to lead staff and serve as a technical resource
  • Strong research skills for coding guidelines and payor policies
  • Previous EPIC experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Professional communication skills and ability to train new staff

Preferred:

  • Over 3 years of medical coding experience
  • Experience with Nuclear Medicine guidelines
  • Knowledge of CMS and local carrier regulations
  • Additional specialty certifications
  • Education in Health Information Science or Management, or relevant coursework in coding
