Job description

NOW ELIGIBLE FOR A $1,500 SIGN-ON BONUS.

To be eligible for a sign-on bonus, the candidate must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee in the last 12 months as an employee subject to the State Human Resources Act.

The position is a Health Care Technician I located at Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, which houses approximately 1318 close custody male offenders.

Health Care Technician I perform the following duties under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse:

  • Assist RNs, LPNs and HCTII's in providing care, treatment and services within their scope of practice, such as obtaining vital signs, weight, height, preparing the patient for examination, etc. as trained and within the scope of practice.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, clothing, toileting, turning and repositioning, ambulation, etc.
  • Transport patients safely using appropriate means.
  • Observing patients and reporting observations to the nurse.
  • The HCT I will collect label specimens such as blood, urine, feces, and sputum as trained within scope of practice.
  • Changing linens and making beds.
  • Keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
  • Engage in therapeutic activities with patients such as group therapies and recreational activities in mental health.

Work Schedule: Work will be performed in various sections at Central Prison Healthcare Complex, Raleigh, NC. Mental Health and Medical Surgery Departments 12-hour day (5:45am - 6:15pm) and/or night (5:45pm - 6:15am) shifts, with alternating weekends.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state’s pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary will be $29,748 - $44,621.

Note to Current State Employees: State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing methods and techniques in caring for medical and/or mentally ill patients.
  • Demonstrated experience in dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience observing patients and compiling reports.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing personal care and treatment of patients.

High school or General Educational Development diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Condition for Continued Employment: As required, listing as a Nurse Aide I by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. As applicable, listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. As applicable, North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
