Job Description

About Us:

What You'll Do:

  • Attend mandated state and federal surveyor training.
  • Travel to health care facilities to participate in (and/or conduct under supervision) onsite inspections of providers to determine compliance.
  • Participate, under supervision, in discussion with facility officials regarding survey findings.
  • Attend (as part of survey team) exit interview meetings with facility staff.
  • Learn to review plans of correction for deficiencies.
  • Complete survey reports and deficiency statements in accordance with the Principles of Documentation.
  • Provide consultation to newer surveyors.

Research and Data Evaluation:

  • Receive training in gathering evidence, for cases which may require legal action.
  • Participate (as a member of survey team) in hearing preparations and hearings.
  • Testify before judicial bodies as assigned.
  • Analyze data collected during survey process and prepare specialized reports as assigned.
  • Assist in drafting responses to problems/questions regarding survey process.
  • Assist supervisor in preparing speeches to community groups, providers, or other agencies; draft and deliver speeches as assigned.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Operate laptop using state-provided software for documentation and reporting of survey findings.
  • Carry necessary equipment to/from worksite.
  • Use computer-assisted processes in conducting and documenting surveys.
  • Utilize data sets (e.g., MDS, OASIS) and quality indicator reports to monitor and evaluate quality indicators.
  • Develop reports/materials required by CMS.
  • Maintain records and reference materials.
  • Complete and submit travel documents, records, expense reports, and survey forms.
  • Notify supervisor of issues affecting timelines.
Important Factors:
  • Travel is frequent; overnight stays and evening/weekend work are expected.
  • Emergency responses are unpredictable; routine surveys are scheduled.
  • Effective technical writing is essential.
  • Work-life balance considerations include vacation approvals based on seniority.
Working Conditions:
  • Requires year-round travel, including overnight stays, regardless of weather.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Certification/licensure in relevant health discipline, 24 months healthcare experience, 12 months computer training/experience, valid driver's license.

Additional: Degree in discipline, survey/inspection experience, passing SMQT, healthcare professional experience, technical/report writing, presentation skills, software proficiency, emergency care experience, training experience.

Additional Requirements:

Review of qualifications, ongoing training, and certification renewal are necessary. Extensive travel, physical inspection activities, and a probationary period apply.
