Under the direction of physicians and clinical staff, the Health Care Assistant (HCA) supports the assigned unit by providing technical patient care services and support related to patients on the nursing unit. Additionally, the HCA assists staff, physicians, visitors, and ancillary departments with routine patient care activities and clerical support as needed. Patient care activities include vital signs, activities of daily living, transport, and transfer of patients, including discharge. Clerical support includes directing incoming calls, responding to patient calls, entering patient charges into the computer system, maintaining patient charts, unit files, and secretarial supply levels, and ensuring a safe and orderly environment.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred Education: Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program and/or Huntsville Hospital Health Care Assistant course is preferred.
License, Certification, and/or Registration: BCLS certification required by the end of orientation.
Experience: Previous patient care experience and/or two years of clerical experience with a successful work history. Equivalent combinations of education and experience in clerical and patient care roles will be considered.
Additional Skills/Abilities: Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
