The Segal Company (Eastern States), Inc.

Health Benefits Consultant (Administrative)

For over 80 years, Segal has been providing employee benefits, retirement plan investment advisory and human resources consulting for multiemployer trust funds, corporations and public sector organizations. Segal is an independent, privately and employee-owned firm. Our independence allows us to provide unbiased consulting services for our clients. Headquartered in New York City, Segal has offices throughout the United States and in Canada. We are a smaller organization that provides a more intense and broader exposure for development purposes within a culture that is highly collegial and team-oriented. We offer a competitive pay and benefits package that includes a defined benefit and matching 401(k) retirement plans.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly motivated professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about driving results. This is a hybrid role based in Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Hartford, CT; New York, NY; or Washington, DC.

Join Segal's East Region as a hands‑on Health Consultant serving a broad range of group health and welfare engagements for public sector, multiemployer, and corporate clients. This role offers meaningful client interaction, ownership of complex assignments, and increasing responsibility for project leadership and client advisory work. Successful candidates will serve as trusted contributors on client engagements, develop specialized technical expertise, and play an active role in mentoring junior colleagues while building toward broader client leadership responsibilities. The position works with multidisciplinary teams that may include actuaries, clinicians, attorneys, and analysts.

The Role:

You will collaborate with the lead consultant and client team to deliver timely, practical advice across health and welfare programs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading defined components of vendor procurements for medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, stop loss, life, disability and other benefit programs, including RFP development, proposal evaluation and recommendation support.
  • Analyzing claims, utilization, cost, funding and plan design data; identifying key drivers, investigating anomalies and translating findings into client implications.
  • Developing and managing multiple concurrent projects and workstreams, including project planning, resource coordination, budgeting, quality review, and delivery of client-ready work products.
  • Supporting pricing of benefit changes, budget projections, renewal analysis, benchmarking and other ad hoc financial or strategic work.
  • Preparing client‑ready reports and presentations that clearly frame the issue, analytical approach, tradeoffs and recommended actions.
  • Coordinating with clients, carriers, vendors and internal specialists; maintaining timely communication and driving complex issues to resolution.
  • Reviewing and providing guidance on the work of junior consultants and analysts, offering coaching, mentorship, and developmental feedback.
  • Contributing to thought leadership, quality improvement initiatives, development of intellectual capital, and other efforts that enhance service quality and practice effectiveness.
  • Supporting business development activities, including proposal development, finalist meetings, and identifying opportunities to expand client relationships.

Health Benefits Consultants are expected to work with a high degree of independence, frequently leading defined projects and serving as a trusted advisor to clients and project teams. Individuals in this role are expected to build subject matter expertise, take an active role in managing client relationships and serving as a trusted advisor on defined areas of responsibility, mentor junior staff, and take ownership of significant project components while helping ensure high-quality deliverables and successful client outcomes.

What You Bring
  • At least 6 years of relevant health benefits, actuarial, managed care, underwriting or consulting experience.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret claims and financial information and communicate conclusions clearly.
  • Working knowledge of health and welfare benefit programs, including plan design, fully insured and self‑insured funding arrangements, vendor management, and cost‑containment strategies.
  • Experience with vendor procurements including proposal evaluation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, accountability, ownership, and follow‑through, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and projects, meet deadlines, and deliver high‑quality results in a fast‑paced, client‑focused environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the judgment to adapt to changing client needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts and recommendations to clients and other non‑technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with strong Excel capabilities.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, or reviewing the work of junior staff is preferred.
