School Health Assistant
The School Health Assistant, supervised by the Cluster School Nurse and the school-based administrator, provides health services to students, staff, families, and visitors. The assistant works collaboratively with the nurse, uses good judgment, and follows health services policies.
ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides first aid and emergency care to students, staff, and visitors across the school building and grounds following state, local, and HCPSS regulations.
- Carries out delegated nursing tasks for students and staff.
- Implements federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services, including state mandated screening programs and communicable disease control.
- Administers medication following established procedures and identifies students with health problems, referring them appropriately.
- Maintains accurate, confidential, and appropriate records; maintains the health suite in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of health care plans and school health promotion activities.
- Communicates medical information in a timely manner to appropriate personnel, parents/guardians, and school nurse; maintains each student's health notebook and assists with a safe environment.
- Participates in school evacuation plans, emergency management, professional development, and student services teams in collaboration with the cluster school nurse.
- Performs physical activities such as walking, standing, lifting and transferring up to 40lbs; performs CPR on floor; responds to emergencies promptly; maintains attendance, dress code, and supplies.
Examples of Work
- Update health notebook and student records when new students enroll or conditions change.
- Complete accident/incident reports for students and employees.
- Participate in school-wide fire and emergency drills and assist in disease outbreak management.
- Regularly communicate changes in student conditions to teachers and administrators.
- Respond to emergencies during recess, arrival, and dismissal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- GED or high‑school diploma (or equivalent). Foreign credentials evaluated by MSDE‑approved organization.
- Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.
- CNA or LPN license, or Certified Medication Technician with required math and reading pretest (70% minimum).
- At least one year of experience in a health‑care setting, preferably with pediatric patients.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in a related field.
- One year health‑care experience and computer proficiency.
- Additional training or certification in medication administration or public health.

- Proficiency in CPR and basic first aid.
- Ability to work cooperatively and independently with discretion.
- Calm under adverse circumstances; ability to manage stress for self and others.
- Effective communication both orally and in writing with students, staff, parents, and administrators.
- Supportive and empathetic environment for students and staff.
WORKING HOURS
The duty day is 7.5 hours, including a 30‑minute unpaid break.
COMPENSATION
Salary GradeVII on the Secretaries and Assistants Salary Scale. The position is a ten‑month per year role in the HCEA‑ESP unit. Health Assistants receive an extra $0.30 per hour during the unpaid lunch break; Telemedicine Health Assistants receive an additional $1.00 per hour. Overtime is not exempt under FLSA.
