Job description

San Mateo County Health Administration is seeking and energetic, creative, customer service oriented, and self-motivated person to join our team as the Program Coordinator-II, to provide administrative and technical support for the department’s transportation demand management and employee/client resource programs. This position is part of a small team that is involved in programs and process improvements that ultimately empower Health staff to deliver the best services and care possible. The Program Coordinator will also work on various projects, as assigned.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide oversight and leadership for the County Health Car Sharing Program.
  • Provide daily technical assistance, support to staff, and oversight of the Car Sharing Program.
  • Implement and document enhancements to County Health’s fleet management systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete complex data analysis on car utilization patterns and driver behavior to influence programmatic and/or policy changes.
  • Oversee Language Assistance Services Program for County Health.
  • Coordinate departmental language interpretation and translation services, including overseeing service contracts.
  • Gather program statistics, report out to stakeholders, and handle correspondence regarding language access services utilization as requested.
  • Coordinate cross-divisional workgroups to develop new policies and update existing policies in accordance with legislative and regulatory changes.
  • Provide oversight to County Health Safety efforts.
  • Facilitate cross-divisional safety and emergency planning meetings.
  • Coordinate education, training, and improvement efforts.
  • Provide regular reviews of existing County Health policies and participate in the development of new policies.
  • Other programmatic support including, but not limited to:
  • Light contract administration/management.
  • Act as a liaison between program staff and contracted vendors.
  • Perform research and/or data gathering activities on County Health priority initiatives.
  • Provide technical and administrative assistance to management and staff.

  • Compile, analyze and interpret data using research techniques; draw sound conclusions and prepare and present effective reports regarding findings and recommendations.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Listen sensitively and accurately, exercise tact, patience and diplomacy.
  • Train staff in work procedures and provide technical and programmatic assistance to staff and contractors.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with staff at various levels of the organization, utilizing the appropriate interpersonal style and methods of communication to gain acceptance, cooperation, or agreement of a plan, activity, and/or program idea.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

  • Program Coordinator II: Bachelor's degree in public or business administration, management or a related field and four years of professional level analytical and administrative experience in a community-related setting.

Departmental Promotional Only. Only current County of San Mateo employees in the San Mateo County Health Department with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date may apply.


The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in the County of San Mateo, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
