Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant will assist the Head Start Teacher in all aspects of the care and training of children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The Teacher Assistant will focus on the development of the whole child, including partnering with parents. Must have proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing in English; provide a safe environment; and maintain regular attendance. Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for classroom activities in the Teacher's absence, administer instructional activities, and evaluate children as directed. This is a Safety Sensitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise and guide classroom staff and volunteers. Manage classroom operations and provide coaching to Teacher Assistants, Special Needs Aides, and volunteers.
  • Ensure proper application and interpretation of policies and procedures by classroom teachers.
  • Develop and monitor staff training plans; assess training needs and participate in in-service training.
  • Observe and evaluate classroom effectiveness; evaluate Teacher Assistants according to program policies.
  • Participate in curriculum development and recommend changes; meet regularly with teachers on lesson plans and classroom management.
  • Implement Head Start curriculum and standards.
  • Work with staff to identify and meet children's individual needs; design meaningful experiences; maintain professional relationships with families and staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case management, and training; consult with service providers regarding child development concerns.
  • Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as per schedule; foster positive home-school connections.
  • Use positive guidance methods; avoid physical punishment or humiliation.
  • Maintain appropriate communication tone with children and parents; ensure a safe and respectful environment.
  • Share mealtimes with children, supporting their dietary needs and fostering positive interactions.
  • Maintain a drug- and vulgar language-free environment; limit cell phone use to emergencies.
  • Respect and support cultural differences; assist non-English-speaking families.
  • Complete documentation and reports promptly; keep records confidential and accurate.
  • Assist with projects and perform other duties as assigned; maintain good attendance and professionalism.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts and community outreach.
  • Attend training and professional development activities.
  • Maintain understanding of Head Start philosophies and policies.
  • Perform cleaning and repetitive tasks as needed.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:

The Teacher Assistant reports to the Head Start Teacher and does not supervise others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must enroll in and complete a CDA or an Associate's Degree within 18 months.
  • First Aid and Infant/Toddler CPR certification within 90 days.
  • Clear criminal background check; no disqualifying offenses.
  • Understanding of low-income families and the role of parents in education.
  • Physical health examination and TB screening documentation.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform physical activities such as sitting, standing, stooping, walking, and lifting up to 40 pounds; operate equipment; communicate effectively; and monitor children constantly. Work environment includes classrooms and offices, with contact with childhood illnesses.
