Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Head Start Teacher Assistant will assist the Head Start Teacher in all aspects of the care and training of children enrolled in the Head Start Program. The Teacher Assistant will teach with emphasis on development of the whole child including partnering with parents. Must have the ability to read, speak and write with proficiency in English language; provide and maintain a safe environment; and maintain regular attendance. Ability and willingness to assume the responsibility for continuing pre-planned classroom activities in the absence of the Teacher; administer planned instructional activities and evaluate children as directed by the Teacher. This is a Safety Sensitive position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide supervision and guidance of classroom staff and volunteers, managing classroom operations and coaching staff.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are properly applied and interpreted.
  • Develop and monitor staff training plans and assess training needs.
  • Observe and evaluate classroom effectiveness and staff performance.
  • Participate in curriculum development and meet regularly with teachers on lesson plans and classroom management.
  • Implement Head Start curriculum and standards, designing meaningful experiences for children.
  • Collaborate with staff to meet individual needs of children and maintain professional relationships.
  • Participate in staff meetings, case management, and training sessions; consult with service providers regarding child development concerns.
  • Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as per schedule.
  • Engage with parents positively, support family involvement, and communicate effectively.
  • Use positive guidance methods, avoiding physical punishment or humiliation.
  • Maintain a pleasant environment during mealtimes, sharing meals with children and supporting dietary needs.
  • Enforce no smoking, vulgar language, and limit cell phone use on premises.
  • Respect and support cultural diversity and assist non-English-speaking families.
  • Complete documentation and reports timely and accurately, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Assist with projects, participate in recruitment, and maintain attendance and record-keeping.
  • Participate in community activities and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform cleaning duties as needed and other duties assigned.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:

The Teacher Assistant works under the supervision of the Head Start Teacher and does not supervise others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Enroll in and complete a CDA program or pursue an Associate's Degree within 18 months.
  • First Aid and Infant/Toddler CPR certification within 90 days.
  • Clear criminal background check; no disqualifying criminal activity.
  • Understanding of low-income families and parental roles in education.
  • Physical health examination and TB screening documentation.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Must be able to perform physical activities such as sitting, standing, stooping, bending, walking, and lifting. Ability to operate equipment, communicate effectively, and monitor children constantly. Ability to lift 30-40 pounds and work in a classroom environment with potential exposure to childhood illnesses.
