JOB SUMMARY:
The Head Start Teacher is responsible for the total program operation of the Head Start Center. The Teacher will plan and actively participate in all activities, involving staff members and parents in planning and execution.
The Teacher must fulfill classroom responsibilities, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned Teacher Aides. Proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing in English is required, along with the ability to provide a safe environment and maintain regular attendance.
In accordance with Head Start Performance Standards, perform the following functions:
- Provide comprehensive services and classroom experiences tailored to individual student needs.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate Teacher Aides.
- Ensure proper application and interpretation of policies and procedures by teachers and assistants.
- Manage staffing planning and implement program objectives and activities.
Demonstrate competency in functions including:
- Planning and implementing learning experiences that promote children's intellectual and physical development, including literacy, language, math, science, problem-solving, and approaches to learning.
- Establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment.
- Supporting social and emotional development.
- Encouraging family involvement and developing relationships between children and families.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and guide classroom staff and volunteers, manage operations, and provide coaching.
- Ensure policies and procedures are correctly applied and interpreted.
- Develop and monitor staff training plans, assess training needs, and plan in-service training.
- Observe, evaluate, and improve classroom effectiveness and staff performance.
- Participate in curriculum development and regular meetings regarding lesson plans and classroom management.
- Implement a comprehensive program aligned with Head Start standards.
- Collaborate with team members to address individual needs of children and support their development.
- Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences as per schedule.
- Engage with parents positively, facilitate home activities, and promote involvement in Head Start activities.
- Use positive behavior guidance methods consistent with Head Start policies.
- Maintain a professional environment, adhere to health and safety standards, and ensure confidentiality.
- Assist with recruitment, record-keeping, and documentation.
- Participate in professional development activities and community outreach.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:
The Head Start Teacher reports directly to the Team Leader and supervises Teacher Assistants, cooks, special needs aides, and volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Oklahoma SDE Teacher Certificate with an Early Childhood Endorsement or equivalent educational background and preschool teaching experience.
- Obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certifications within 90 days of hire.
- Clear criminal background checks and no disqualifying criminal activity.
- Understanding of low-income family dynamics and parental roles in education.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
- Ability to perform physical activities such as standing, stooping, walking, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
- Work environment includes classrooms and offices, with potential contact with childhood illnesses.
- Visual monitoring of children’s behavior and activities.
